"He promised he would come back on Christmas day..." You sighed and walked away from the window.
Ludwig had joined the army, but you knew he was too strong to die. Every few weeks you would receive a letter from him in the mail. The latest letter had arrived just two days ago, but in it he said he would be back on the 25th. You had decided you would cook his favorite meal for when he got back. The house was spotless and you had even decided to dress up for him. Not seeing him for two years had been rough, but he was finally coming home!
It was already 10 P.M. and Ludwig still wasn't home. You had sadly put away the food and couldn't stop yourself from repeatedly checking out the window. Every time a car drove past you would rush to the front door, but close it once the car was out of sight.
"Where could he be?" You mumbled sadly to yourself. Then, the phone rang. You dived towards the phone before it could even ring again. "Ludwig?" You shouted into the phone.
"No! Geez, (Name). Are you trying to get rid of my hearing?" You fell onto the couch feeling worse.
"I'm sorry Gilbert." Hearing Ludwig's brother only made you miss him more.
"It's fine, but I have bad news. The area where Ludwig was supposed to be driving back from has just had a huge snowstorm. If he isn't back home by now, he probably won't be back until tomorrow."
"Oh, I see." You felt your eyes filling with tears and you sighed quietly. Hearing this, Gilbert sighed as well.
"Look, I know you're upset, but he will be back tomorrow. Just get some rest and be glad you only have to wait one more day."
"You're right. Thanks Gilbert."
"Bye." You hung up the phone, but didn't feel motivated to walk upstairs. You grabbed the blanket you kept on the armchair and decided to just take a quick nap on the couch. Maybe in a little while you would feel motivated enough to climb into your empty bed one more time.
Working all day to prepare the house for Ludwig's arrival had been exhausting. Knowing he wouldn't be home until tomorrow, you quickly fell asleep.
You rubbed your eyes and looked at the clock. It was only 11:30 P.M. Why had you woken up so quickly? You took a glance around the room and then noticed something odd.
"When did I get in bed?" You climbed out of your bed and quickly walked downstairs. Noticing the lights were on in the living room, you decided to see who was there. There, standing next to the Christmas tree, was Ludwig. His back was turned away from you and he must not have realized you were there.
"You're back." You whispered so quietly, you didn't think he heard you. His head whipped around to look at you.
"(Name)." You ran and threw your arms around him. Tears were falling from you eyes as you held onto him for dear life.
"I missed you so much." You cried into his chest. He held you tighter and placed kisses on top of your head.
"I missed you too." You backed away so you could get a good look at him. He looked tired and his hair was a little disheveled, but he looked just as happy as you felt. His eyes gazed into yours and in that moment everything was better. All the days spent crying because you missed him, were over now.
"I'm sorry I wasn't home sooner. I had to go pick up your Christmas present and once I got home you were asleep on the couch. I thought I'd just give you your present tomorrow, but I guess you don't have to wait now." Ludwig walked over to the table and grabbed a large bouquet of roses. He then led you over to the couch and placed them in your hands. You smiled happily at him.
"You didn't have to get me anything. I'm just happy you are here." You told him as he sat on the ground in front of you. You put the flowers next to you on the couch and he leaned his head on you knees.
"I love you so much (Name)." Ludwig looked up at you and you leaned down to kiss him. He moved out of the way just before you were able to.
"What was that for?" You asked annoyed as he smiled teasingly.
"I still have to give you the rest of your present. You can kiss me after."
"Fine, but hurry up." You pouted and he laughed. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. Placing it in your hand he watched as you undid the wrapped. Inside the wrapping was a tiny velvet box. Opening the box was a thin silver ring with a single diamond in the center. In the light, it sparkled beautifully. You slowly looked at the ring and then looked at Ludwig. He was now kneeling on the floor near the couch.
"(Name)." Tears were filling your eyes as he smiled at you. "I love you so much. I can not imagine living in a world without you. Being apart from you for so long has made me realize how much I truly need you. I can't live any longer not knowing if you are truly and completely mine. Please, (Name), do me a great honor and become my wife. I will love you forever and I will always be there for you. (Name), will you marry me?" You couldn't speak. Tears were spilling down your cheeks and all you could do was nod. swallowing you tears you were finally able to force yourself to speak.
"Yes, Ludwig." This was all you were able to say as he took the ring and slid it onto your finger. He leaned in and kissed you. Once the kiss ended, you noticed his eyes held tears as well.
"Thank you for keeping your promise." You whispered against his lips. He backed up and looked at you quizzically.
"You came home for Christmas. This was the best present I could possibly ask for." As you leaned in to kiss him again, you noticed the time on the clock.
It was midnight.
